NEW YORK (AP) - An education advocacy group is seeking to get New York State to make good on a 2007 promise to increase school spending in New York City schools.
New Yorkers for Students’ Educational Rights is scheduled to file a law suit Tuesday in Manhattan state Supreme Court.
According to The New York Times (https://nyti.ms/1kybkz2 ), it says the state is $4 billion behind in fulfilling the agreement.
The group’s lawyer says the amount could be reduced by $325 million if Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s budget is adopted.
The Court of Appeals in 2006 ruled that the state had to increase school spending in New York City. The following year, the state promised to funnel out $7 billion worth of additional aid over four years. When the recession hit, the entire amount never materialized.
