SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (AP) - The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit has announced that it raised $8.8 million through its 2013 Red Kettle campaign.
The nonprofit’s holiday season haul means it was able to meet its goal of $8.75 million. The 85-day campaign ran Nov. 8, 2013, through Jan. 31.
The area Salvation Army also received gifts of more than $700,000 throughout the Christmas season, including winter coats; hats and gloves; toys; and canned goods and other food items.
Money raised during the Red Kettle campaign represents the primary financial source for the Salvation Army’s programs and services, which include meals; lodging; utility assistance; free legal aid; after-school programs; youth programs; drug and alcohol rehabilitation and disaster aid.
