RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A cardiovascular surgeon who’s already got two leadership hats within the state Department of Health and Human Services now has a third as the new leader of the state Medicaid office.

The department announced Tuesday that Dr. Robin Cummings will lead the Division of Medicaid Assistance, which operates the government insurance program for about 1.7 million state residents. But the department made clear he is not the new Medicaid director. That post was vacated by Carol Steckel last fall and is now held by acting director Sandy Terrell.

DHHS Secretary Dr. Aldona Wos (vahsh) says Cummings will focus on working to “transform” Medicaid operations by identifying where services can be delivered better.

Cummings also will remain acting state health director and a DHHS deputy secretary.
