BETHEL, Alaska (AP) - The city of Bethel is looking into loosening the rules involving hiring family members.
KYUK reports (https://bit.ly/1iLrKkK) city administrators have put forth changes in the city code before the city council regarding hiring practices. Current policies are aimed at preventing nepotism and conflict of interest.
City Manager Lee Foley said small towns have to hire relatives because of the small labor pool available.
Foley’s son works in the city’s IT department. Foley stated that department does not report to him.
Former police chief Larry Elarton’s daughter works as a patrol officer in Bethel. Elarton resigned Thursday. An explanation for the resignation was not given.
