MAN CHARGED IN LOUD MUSIC KILLING TAKES STAND
The defense has rested in the trial of a Florida man charged with fatally shooting a 17-year-old boy after an argument over loud music. Defendant Michael Dunn’s lawyer rested Tuesday after calling him to the witness stand. Dunn says he feared for his life when he fired the bullets that killed 17-year-old Jordan Davis of Marietta, Ga., outside a Jacksonville convenience store in 2012. He is pleading not guilty to first-degree murder.
TESTIMONY UNDERWAY IN EX-REPORTER’S DEATH
Prosecutors say a man accused of killing a former newspaper reporter and stealing his valuable collection of gaming cards kept the body in a container surrounded by air freshener and potpourri for more than a week before burying the container in concrete. Prosecutor Bridgette Jensen showed jurors Tuesday an identical plastic container during opening statements in the first-degree murder trial of William Joseph Cormier III.
ORANGE COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPUTY KILLED
A central Florida sheriff’s deputy was fatally shot while responding to a car burglary call near Orlando. According to the Orange County sheriff’s office, the 34-year-old deputy saw a suspect sitting in a car with a woman late Monday. The suspect started to run and the deputy pursued him. That’s when the man fired at the deputy, hitting him. The suspect was found dead a short distance away, but authorities don’t believe he was shot by the deputy.
TEEN ARRESTED IN THEFT OF GIRL SCOUT’S PHONE
A 15-year-old boy has been arrested by Fort Lauderdale police on charges of stealing a Girl Scout’s cell phone while she was selling cookies outside a local grocery store. Police said Tuesday they identified the ninth-grader from previous police encounters by viewing the Winn-Dixie store’s video surveillance. He’s facing grand larceny charges.
SEARCH CONTINUES FOR MISSING BRITISH PILOT
Authorities are searching for a missing British pilot off the coast of southeast Florida. The Martin County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Coast Guard continued their search Tuesday for Andrei Postelnicu. He left Marathon in the Florida Keys on Friday and was scheduled to land in Vero Beach that evening. His plane was reported missing the next day.
