SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) - The Springfield City Council is considering a measure to pay its members.
That would require changing the city charter, which forbids such compensation. The Eugene Register-Guard reports (https://bit.ly/LPVcd5 ) a measure could go to voters as soon as May.
The proposal would pay the mayor $500 a month, council members $300. Proponents say that recognizes the time the officials put into the job.
The council members are compensated for expenses - the city says that averages $543 a month for the whole council. Each member also gets $85 a month for Internet and cellphone expenses, and each gets the use of an iPad to conduct city business.
In neighboring Eugene, voters in 2000 approved pay for its officials: $1,815 a month for the mayor, $1,210 for council members.
