PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Representatives for three Democratic candidates for Rhode Island governor have met to discuss proposals to keep super PAC spending out of the race.
John Marion, executive director of Common Cause Rhode Island, facilitated Monday’s meeting with representatives from the campaigns of Clay Pell, Treasurer Gina Raimondo and Providence Mayor Angel Taveras.
While no deal was reached, Taveras and Raimondo campaign officials say the meeting was fruitful.
Super PACs are independent political groups that can raise and spend unlimited amounts of money on a race. The candidates say they would like to limit the influence of super PACs in the race but haven’t agreed on any details.
Taveras wants candidates to donate money to charity if a super PAC aids their campaign. Raimondo wants a complete ban on any outside spending.
