PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse has joined Arizona U.S. Sen. John McCain to lead a congressional delegation at a Munich security conference renowned as a venue for backroom diplomacy and negotiations.

Whitehouse is a senior Democrat in the delegation at the conference that has brought together top diplomats and defense officials to discuss various issues, including several international crises. McCain is the senior Republican in the congressional team.

Whitehouse is scheduled to participate in a weekend panel discussion on energy and climate security.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry as well as Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel are leading the administration’s delegation in Munich.

Participants in the conference include U.S., European and other diplomats, lawmakers, military officers, think tank and academic specialists and former government officials such as Henry Kissinger.
