JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - A spokeswoman for Gov. Sean Parnell says Parnell will evaluate the candidates to replace Beth Kerttula in the Alaska House on competence, character and their history in the district.
The Tongass Democrats received nine applications for the job and planned to hold public interviews with those individuals on Saturday.
The group plans to submit a list of three finalists to Parnell by Tuesday for consideration.
Under the law, the governor is to appoint a qualified replacement within 30 days of a vacancy. Kerttula stepped down as House Democratic leader on Jan 21 and resigned from the Legislature three days later to take a fellowship at Stanford University.
The person Parnell chooses will be subject to confirmation by a majority of House Democrats.
