FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) - A prominent Colorado State University fraternity has been formally shut down.

University officials cited a pattern of alcohol use and possible sexual misconduct by members of the Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter.

The 71 members of the fraternity no longer live in the red brick home across from the University Center for the Arts.

The Fort Collins Coloradoan reports (https://noconow.co/LyVi9E) that Sigma Phi Epsilon had appealed an earlier decision to strip university recognition until the spring 2018 semester. But CSU officials upheld that decision on Friday, saying the fraternity was not safe.

CSU officials say the suspension of university recognition will allow current members of the fraternity to graduate and leave before the chapter can start recruiting and return to campus.

The chapter was chartered in 1915.
