LISBON, Portugal (AP) - Substitute Oscar Cardozo marked his return from a back injury with a forgettable finale after failing on a late penalty for 10-man Benfica to draw 1-1 at Gil Vicente in the Portuguese league on Saturday.
Cardozo, returning after two months, missed the stoppage-time penalty after denying teammate Lima the chance to take the spot kick despite the Brazilian forward having already scored one in the 62nd, five minutes after Benfica was reduced to 10-men from Guilherme Siqueira’s red card.
Vitinha canceled out Lima’s effort from the spot in the 73rd as Portuguese leader Benfica moved four points clear of third-place Porto, which lost 1-0 at Maritimo as a result of Derley’s 13th-minute penalty.
Sporting Lisbon can join Benfica on 40 points by beating Academica on Sunday.
Also, Setubal beat Rio Ave 2-0.
