A Chinese engineer has been charged with trying to steal documents on the F135 engine used in the U.S. F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Program.
Yu Long was arrested in the Ithaca, New York in November after customs officers at Newark Liberty International Airport found him in possession of sensitive information related to the aircraft. Yu, then a resident of Connecticut while working for the United Technologies Research Center, was headed for China, Reuters reported Tuesday.
On Yu at the time of his arrest were documents on how to develop titanium for U.S. military aircraft, prosecutors said, Reuters reported.
Prosecutors also assert that Yu had $10,000 in undeclared cash on him at John F. Kennedy International Airport August, along with registration documents for a Chinese corporation and an application to work for an aviation research center in China, Reuters said.
United Technologies Research Center said in a statement that it was cooperating with authorities.
