OPINION:
Taking part in an “hour of code” event at the White House, President Obama told students Monday that they must learn how to “create a video game,” not just play one.
The “hour of code” events, held across the country Monday, encourage Americans to learn the basics of computer programming and the coding behind video games and other technology. Mr. Obama and Vice President Joseph R. Biden met with 18 middle-school students Monday on the White House grounds as part of the initiative.
“We’re starting too late with regards to making sure that our young people know not only how to play video games, but also create a video game,” the president said. “One of the great things about America is that we invent stuff and make stuff, not just use it.”
Mr. Obama and Mr. Biden talked with students about technology projects they’re working on. The president said seemingly difficult concepts behind today’s technology “aren’t that complicated.”
