The Canadian Embassy in Cairo has shuttered operations amid security concerns, announcing it closure via voice-mail on its telephone-answering machine on Monday.
A security agent said that Canadians had asked Egyptian forces to provide more security in and around the site, and to shut down nearby roads, The Associated Press reported. Apparently, Egypt agreed to the former request, but not the latter, AP said.
It’s not clear if the embassy was closed due to any direct and specific threat.
The closing comes just a day after the British Embassy shut its doors to the public. Both embassies are located in Cairo’s Garden City neighborhood, right by the U.S. Embassy — which is still open, AP said.
Egypt has seen widespread and violent protests and attacks since the military coup of Muslim Brotherhood-backed former President Mohammed Morsi months ago.
