Indian police have arrested an Uber cab driver after a female passenger accused him of rape, and now authorities are threatening to take legal action against the U.S. company for allegedly failing to provide a background check.
Shiv Kumar Yadav, 32, was arrested in Uttar Pradesh after a 26-year-old woman claimed he sexually assaulted and beat her during a cab ride to her home Friday night. Mr. Yadav will be brought before a New Delhi court on Monday, Reuters reported.
Madhur Verma, deputy commissioner with the Delhi police, said the police would take legal action against Uber for alleged violations, including a failure to give Mr. Yadav a background check, Reuters reported.
“Every violation by Uber will be evaluated and we will go for legal recourse,” Mr. Verma said.
Uber said in a statement Sunday that it suspended the driver and provided the authorities with “all relevant details,” such as driver, vehicle and trip information, Reuters reported.
“Safety is Uber’s highest priority and in India, we work with licensed driver-partners to provide a safe transportation option,” Uber spokeswoman Evelyn Tay said in the statement.
