Quarterback Colt McCoy sustained a neck injury in the Washington Redskins’ 24-0 loss to St. Louis on Sunday, leaving the game with two minutes remaining and making way for Robert Griffin III’s first appearance since being benched on Nov. 26.

McCoy was injured on a sack by Robert Quinn with 6:54 remaining, with the defensive end rushing by left tackle Trent Williams — who appeared to miss the snap — and clubbing McCoy from behind with his right arm.

Coach Jay Gruden said McCoy sprained his neck, but a person familiar with the situation said McCoy was experiencing symptoms more closely related to a pinched nerve near his right shoulder.

“We’ve got to look at Colt and see how his neck is doing and then look at the tape and see what happened, as far as the protection is concerned,” Gruden said, when asked about the starter for the Redskins’ upcoming road game against the New York Giants on Dec. 14.

“You know, one of the reasons we took out Robert in the first place is the lack of production on offense. We brought Colt in here, and he did some good things last week, and this week — same thing. No production, so to speak, but I’ve got to look at the film to try to make a judgment on the quarterback situation.”

McCoy did not host the postgame press conference typically reserved for the team’s quarterback, as Washington’s medical staff ushered him to a nearby hospital to undergo additional medical examinations.

Before leaving the game, McCoy completed 20 of 32 passes for 199 yards with two interceptions. He was also sacked six times, tying a career high.

Griffin, benched in favor of McCoy before the Redskins’ game at Indianapolis on Nov. 30, completed three of his four pass attempts for 33 yards and was also sacked once.
