Police say an Edmonton man shot and killed eight people — including two children — before taking his own life.
“This series of events are not believed to be random acts, and there is no risk to the broader public,” said Edmonton Police Chief Ron Knecht, CNN reported. “These events do not appear to be gang related but rather tragic incidents of domestic violence.”
Family members of the man, who has not yet been named, say he was “depressed and overly emotional,” CNN said.
Police have only identified one of the victims — Cyndi Duong, 37 — but say all are connected and two were children. Their bodies were discovered inside a home in north Edmonton.
Authorities first responded to a home in southwest Edmonton after receiving a complaint about a gunshot, CNN reported. They found a dead woman inside. Shortly after, police then received a call from a family asking them to check on one of their relatives — a man at a north Edmonton home they described as “depressed and overly emotional,” CNN said,
“The family was concerned the male might be suicidal,” Chief Knecht said, CNN reported.
Nobody answered, and police left. A day later, they returned and inside, found seven people dead — three women, two men, a boy and a girl, Chief Knecht said.
Later, they responded to a restaurant about 20 miles from Edmonton and found a man inside, dead from an apparent suicide gunshot. Police are nearly certain the man is the shooter of the other eight they found, CNN said.
“We are not looking for other suspects,” Mr. Knecht said.
