Two school buses collided while traveling a Tennessee highway, killing three and injuring 23.

Among the killed were two children, Fox News reported.

Knoxville Police Chief David Rausch said the third who died was an adult aide, The Associated Press reported.

Three of those injured were taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment, and later listed in stable condition, Mr. Rausch said. The other injured — 20 children — were taken to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital with mostly bumps and scrapes, Fox News reported.

Police said the children were from an intermediate school and a primary school, the latter which serves children from kindergarten through second grade. The intermediate school serves children between the third and fifth grades.

“This is an unspeakable tragedy,” said Knox County Schools Superintendent Jim McIntyre, during an emotional press conference, Fox News said. “This is what we work every day to try to prevent.”

It’s still not clear what caused the crash, though a light rain had been falling most of the day and weather officials reported spots of fog and mist in the region.
