St. Louis-area police union members have been quietly providing round-the-clock personal protection for former Ferguson Officer Darren Wilson and his family ever since the Aug. 9 fatal shooting of Michael Brown.
“Fraternal Order of Police members from the surrounding area volunteered and have provided him with security from that time, right up until the present,” the union’s executive director, Jim Pasco, told CNN.
“We’ll work with him as long as necessary,” Mr. Pasco said.
Mr. Wilson’s attorney, Neil Bruntrager, confirmed the security arrangement, saying his client has been the target of numerous personal threats since the shooting, USA Today reported. Mr. Wilson decided to resign from the police force last week over concerns for the safety of his colleagues.
“This [security] arrangement is very unusual, but point me to a case like this one,’’ Mr. Bruntrager told USA Today, declining to elaborate on the details of the arrangement. “There were bounties that had been placed upon his life.”
Federal officials arrested Monday a Seattle-area man, Jaleel Tariq Abdul-Jabbaar, after he allegedly posted multiple death threats online against Mr. Wilson.
