Appearing alongside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence said support for Israel in the United States “has never been stronger.”
“The strong and broad bipartisan support for the state of Israel I know will be reflected in decisions that our Congress makes in the months ahead to preserve the support the United States provides to Israel, to ensure that Israel is able to enter into negotiations to achieve defensible borders and secure its own peace and security in the years ahead,” Mr. Pence said in a video released Monday by Mr. Netanyahu’s office.
Mr. Pence, a former congressman, said speaking from his experience on Capitol Hill and as governor that “support for Israel in the United States has never been stronger.”
He’s been mentioned as a potential presidential candidate on the GOP side in 2016, and the journey to Israel signifies the latest example of a trip that has become almost a requirement of sorts for Republicans pondering a run at the White House.
Mr. Pence is in the midst of a nine-day trip to the country that is scheduled to include a three-day economic development mission; the cost of the state delegation is being covered by private donations, according to his office.
Speaking before Mr. Pence, Mr. Netanyahu said he expected “responsible” members of the international community to oppose a proposal that could come before the U.N. calling on Israel to withdraw from some Palestinian territories, saying that Israel “will oppose conditions that will endanger our future.”
