OPINION:
I agree with Rob Arnold’s assessment that Eric Holder and this administration have set back race relations by decades (“Al Sharpton, Eric Holder, Louis Farrakhan set back race relations progress,” Web, Dec. 11). In my 65 years as a white male, I have seen a major leap forward in racial harmony among all races. Interracial marriages were virtually unheard of when I was a teenager in southeastern Pennsylvania in the 1960s. Today, such a thing is not only common but is accepted by most people, regardless of race, ethnicity or cultural background.
For Mr. Holder and the Obama administration to continue to use the mistakes of our country’s past as a gauge of our current racial health serves only to inflame the fires of the last vestiges of racial discord and provide a platform for race hustlers. This allows individuals such as Al Sharpton to spread their hateful rhetoric and act as judge, jury and executioner on all matters relating to race, be they real or contrived.
Our country will never close the racial divide as long as we are mired in a dark past that has long been healed and was on the road to final recovery, except for the purveyors of fictitious racial animus. President Obama could renew the healing process in earnest if he dismissed the likes of Mr. Sharpton and his cabal and embraced people who truly want a lasting solution to racial harmony in our country.
