A foundation founded by George Steinbrenner of New York Yankees’ fame will reportedly pay for the education expenses for the sons of one of the police officers who was murdered in a daylight ambush over the weekend.
The Yankee Silver Shield Foundation has announced the outreach for Officer Rafael Ramos’ sons, one of whom is in college and another, Jaden, who is 13 years old, the New York Daily News reported.
Ramos, 40, along with Officer Wenjian Liu, were sitting in his patrol vehicle in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn on Saturday when Ismaaiyl Brinsley, 28, shot them point blank and killed them. Brinsley later killed himself in a Brooklyn subway station, various media reported.
Jaden later posted on Facebook a touching tribute to his father: “Today I had to say bye to my father. He was [there] for me everyday of my life. He was the best father I could ask for. It’s horrible that someone gets shot dead just for being a police officer. Everyone says they hate cops, but they are the people that they call for help. I will always love you and I will never forget you. RIP Dad.”
Ramos’ cousin, Ronnie Gonzalez, told The Wall Street Journal that Ramos was a “God-loving man” and devoted husband and father.
“I wish I could be half the man my cousin was,” Mr. Gonzalez said, Fox News reported.
The Silver Shield foundation was started in 1982 by Steinbrenner — who died in 2010 — as a way of helping the families of officers who were killed in the line of duty.
