Rookie outside linebacker Trent Murphy will most likely miss the Redskins’ season finale next week after breaking his right hand in Saturday’s 27-24 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.
Murphy left the game on Philadelphia’s second drive after fracturing the third metacarpal in his hand. After undergoing additional tests Sunday, the 23-year-old was characterized by coach Jay Gruden as a “long shot” to play against the Dallas Cowboys on Dec. 28.
“I would say Trent’s going to be a long-shot right now,” Gruden said. “He fractured his hand and I don’t know if he’s going to play through that right now. We’ll get a better understanding of that [Monday].”
Murphy was pressed into action earlier than expected when starter Brian Orakpo was placed on injured reserve with a torn pectoral Oct. 20, but he has made strides as the season has progressed, impressing defensive coordinator Jim Haslett with his run-stopping prowess.
In other injury news, left tackle Trent Williams will continue to nurse the sprained right shoulder that ailed him all of last week and was aggravated during Saturday’s win. Gruden said the team will continue to monitor Williams’ injury and provide further updates during the week.
“It’s the same injury. It’s just very, very painful for him,” Gruden said. “Hopefully he’ll be up and ready to go next week, but he’s pretty sore.”
Center Kory Lichtensteiger (stinger), safety Ryan Clark (ankle) and defensive lineman Kedric Golston (shoulder) each briefly left Saturday’s game but are expected to play next week.
