A handful of Democrats took to the House floor to protest the lack of an indictment in the shooting of an unarmed teen in Ferguson — raising their arms to their chest and displaying open palms in a “Hands up, don’t shoot” gesture.
Among the congressional members to send the not-so-subtle message of alliance with St. Louis-area protesters late Monday night were New York’s Hakeem Jeffries and Yvette Clarke, as well as Texas’ Al Green.
Mediaite reported that Mr. Green made the gesture in reference to the five players on the St. Louis Rams who did the same as they took to the field on Sunday.
The “Hands up, don’t shoot” gesture has been widely seen as a display of alliance with those in Ferguson who found the grand jury ruling on then-Officer Darren Wilson appalling. The grand jury determined that no forensic and witness evidence existed to indict Mr. Wilson on charges related to his Aug. 9 shooting death of teen Michael Brown.
