Detroit’s schools, jails and government buildings were plunged into darkness Tuesday in a massive power failure that spread across the city for at least two hours.
The outage affected most of the city’s buildings that are tied to the main grid — including its police and fire departments, Business Insider reported. Traffic lights were also inoperative, a city representative said.
Some people were trapped in elevators at buildings throughout Detroit, Fire Chief Jack Wiley said.
The power grid — which serves also the Detroit Institute of Arts, Wayne State and the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice — went out about 10:30 a.m. for at least two hours. Most of the impacted sites have seen their power returned — but many area schools dismissed students early due to the outages, Business Insider reported.
