Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes says that while her bid to oust incoming Majority Leader Mitch McConnell didn’t turn out as she’d hope, she knows that “there’s a bigger plan in store.”
“We’re excited for 2015,” Ms. Grimes told WHAS 11, an ABC affiliate, when asked about her plans. “It has been a great year, and I’m taking time to reflect on what has been an amazing journey, spend time with family and friends and to continue to do the job that I was elected to do as secretary of state.”
Ms. Grimes had been seen by Democrats as a candidate who could provide the party one of its few precious opportunities to pick up a Senate seat this year. Despite a spirited campaign, she ended up losing to Mr. McConnell by about 15 points.
Attorney General Jack Conway, a Democrat, is running in the 2015 contest to replace Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear, who is term-limited out. Mr. Beshear’s son Andy Beshear is running for attorney general on the Democratic side.
“There’s encouragement from all different directions, no shortage of opinions, that’s for sure,” Ms. Grimes said. “But no election should be run unless it’s in your heart and the facts are there to win, and that’s what I will weigh and to make sure is there before I make any determination.”
