Mayor-elect Muriel Bowser was part of the five-person team that made the pitch to the U.S. Olympic Committee Tuesday to select the District as the United States’ contender to host the 2024 summer Olympics.
Ms. Bowser travelled to Redwood City, California to address the committee alongside D.C. 2024 chairmen Ted Leonsis and Russ Ramsey; Olympic swimming champ Katie Ledecky, who hails from Montgomery County, and former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue.
“In DC, when we want something, we go for it, and I am proud of the effort our team put forward today,” Ms. Bowser said in a statement issued after the meeting. “We recognize that hosting the Games would not only be a tremendous opportunity for our city, but a great place to foster international unity and friendly competition among the best athletes in the world.”
The District is competing against other finalist cities of Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
“Should the U.S. Olympic Committee select Washington, D.C., I am committed to working with regional leaders to develop a plan that will benefit residents and leave a positive, lasting impact on our city,” Ms. Bowser said.
