Prosecutors in Chicago said Wednesday that they arrested an alleged Mexico drug cartel boss who oversaw cocaine shipments into the area.
Pablo Vega Cuevas, 40, was arrested Tuesday in Oklahoma. Seven others were arrested in connection with an investigation, which led to the seizure of 68 kilograms of heroin, 9 kilograms of cocaine and more than $500,000 in cash, Reuters reported.
Mr. Cuevas is said to belong to the Guerreros Unidos cartel. His brother-in-law, Alexander Figueroa, 37, was also arrested.
“These arrests will have a significant impact on the supply and distribution of heroin and cocaine throughout the Midwest,” Dennis Wichern, special agent-in-charge of the Chicago division of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, said in a statement, Reuters said.
Mr. Vega, Mr. Figueroa and five other defendants face 10 years to life in prison and a $10 million fine if they are convicted of the trafficking charges, Reuters reported.
