Fire tore through a senior living apartment complex in a northeastern corner of Dallas, Texas, early Wednesday morning, forcing residents to flee and firefighters to rush to save several at the same time they battled the five-alarm blaze.

The Gatewood Apartments went up in flames around 2 a.m., officials at the scene said, CBS News reported. Dallas Fire-Rescue said about 300 people were evacuated or forced into the streets, some on ladders provided by the emergency responders, KTVT reported.

Many of the residents were in wheelchairs or otherwise handicapped, CBS News reported. A handful were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

More than 150 firefighters responded to the scene. The cause is still unknown.
