Forty-eight percent of New Jersey voters approve of the way Gov. Chris Christie is handling his job and 47 percent disapprove, according to a poll out Wednesday.
More than eight in 10 Republicans approve, while about three-quarters of Democrats disapprove. Fifty-one percent of independent voters approve and 45 percent disapprove.
“Gov. Christie’s job approval numbers continue on the tepid track that started with the Bridgegate story, a dramatic contrast with the heady 2013 days when he was swooping to re-election,” said Maurice Carroll, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.
Indeed, Mr. Christie’s job approval rating was at 74 percent in the poll in February 2013, but was at 55 percent in January and has been in the mid-to-high 40s since then in Quinnipiac surveys.
A legislative panel recently said it found no conclusive evidence as to whether Mr. Christie was aware of top aides’ ordering the closure of lanes onto the George Washington Bridge last year or was involved in implementing or directing the closures.
The incident had proven to be a headache for the possible 2016 presidential contender, who apologized at a lengthy press conference and cut ties with two top aides involved with the closures.
The survey of 1,340 registered voters was taken Dec. 3-8 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.
