Elizabeth Lauten, the GOP staffer who faced widespread criticisms for posting on Facebook a blistering rebuke of the choice of dress of President Obama’s daughters, Sasha and Malia, said Monday she’s resigning.
In a tweet, @AlexNBCNews wrote: “GOP staffer Elizabeth Lauten tells NBC News she is ’resigning today’ following her comments about Sasha and Malia Obama,” USA Today reported.
Ms. Lauten, communications director for Rep. Stephen Fincher, wrote last week on her Facebook page that the girls — who were dressed rather casually for the White House turkey pardon ceremony — should “try showing a little class,” in widely reported comments.
She went on: “Dear Sash and Malia, I get you’re both in those awful teen years, but you’re a part of the First Family, try showing a little class. At least respect the part you play. Then again your mother and father don’t respect their positions very much, or the nation for that matter, so I’m guessing you’re coming up a little short in the ’good role model’ department. Nevertheless, stretch yourself. Rise to the occasion. Act like being in the White House matters to you. Dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar. And certainly don’t make faces during televised public events.”
Her comments quickly drew fire from the social media crowd, who accused her of cyberbullying.
Ms. Lauten shortly after apologized on Facebook for the rant, saying she “quickly judged” the Obama girls “in a way that I would never have wanted to be judged myself as a teenager,” she wrote, The Huffington Post reported.
