Michael Mulgrew, who heads up the United Federation of Teachers, issued a venomous, violent screed against those who dare to oppose Common Core, the federally pushed education standards: “I’m going to punch you in the face,” he said during a speech in Los Angeles.
His remarks, made last month at the American Federation of Teachers Convention in California, were just posted Thursday via video at the Ed Notes Online blog site.
Among his statements: “If someone takes something from me, I’m going to grab it right back out of their cold, twisted, sick hands and say it is mine. You do not take what is mine. … And I’m going to punch you in the face and push you in the dirt because this is the teachers. These are our tools, and you sick people need to deal with us and the children that we teach. Thank you very much,” the New York Daily News reported.
He made the remarks while engaging in a heated debate about a resolution that union members wanted to pass in support of Common Core — despite many in the union who were disappointed with the program, the New York Daily News reported.
At least one audience member was shocked at Mr. Mulgrew’s statements.
“It was scary,” the source who requested anonymity said, the New York Daily News reported. “People were saying that he shouldn’t be around children.”
