A ferry carrying hundreds of passengers capsized Monday, killing an untold number.

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority chairman Samsuddoha Khondaker said the M.V. Pinak was in process of crossing the River Padma, when it flipped on its side, CBS News reported. Local media, meanwhile, said up to 250 were on board at the time — and it’s not clear how many managed to make it to safety.

Local police Chief Tofazzal Hossain said some may have been able to swim to safety, but many more were believed to have been trapped and drowned, CBS News reported.

Just a few weeks ago, another ferry accident in the same district left about 50 dead.
