In a prelude to possible U.S. air strikes in Syria against Islamic militants, President Obama is convening a meeting of his national-security team Thursday at the White House.
The 4 p.m. meeting in the highly secure White House situation room was added to the president’s schedule Thursday morning. The president and his advisers are expected to discuss the Islamic State, whose fighters have been the target of more than 100 U.S. air strikes in Iraq since Aug. 8.
Vice President Joseph R. Biden, on a Democratic fundraising trip to Pennsylvania, will participate in the meeting via a secure hookup.
The president has ordered surveillance flights over Syria to locate potential targets of the terrorist group, which is holding several Americans hostage and has seized large swaths of territory in both countries.
