LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Gov. Rick Snyder says that state health Director Jim Haveman is resigning after having a mild stroke.
Snyder said in a statement Thursday that Haveman originally planned to remain as head of the Michigan Department of Community Health into 2015 but moved up his departure because of the Memorial Day stroke. Snyder says Haveman will quit Sept. 12 and says Chief Deputy Director Nick Lyon will become director.
The governor credits Haveman with promoting “an ambitious health and wellness agenda that has led to inclusive, bipartisan support to implement a number of key health initiatives.”
Haveman became health director in 2012. He also served as director in 1996-2003 and was state mental health director in 1991-1996.
He says that leaving has been “a difficult decision” because he loves his work.
