A former D.C. Council candidate was sentenced on Thursday to 60 days in jail for making false reports to the District’s campaign finance office and concealing $140,000 he received from a shadow financier.
Jeff Smith, 40, admitted to receiving the illegal funds from businessman Jeffrey E. Thompson in 2010 during his unsuccessful run against council member Jim Graham for the Ward 1 seat. Campaign donations are capped at $500 per person to those running for D.C. Council seats.
Thompson has also admitted to providing illegal campaign contributions to a host of other politicians but is cooperating with the government on the case.
D.C. Superior Court Judge Anita Josey-Herring also sentenced Smith to a year of probation, 400 hours of community service, and required him to pay a $10,000 fine.
