The head of the Democratic National Committee said Wednesday that she trusts Charlie Crist — the Republican turned independent and then Democrat — to stick to her party’s principles if he is elected for a second time as governor of Florida.
“I trust Charlie Christ to be a strong voice for working families,” Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Florida Democrat, said on MSNBC’s “The Daily Rundown.”
Mr. Crist, who served as a Republican governor from 2007 to 2011, won the Democratic primary Tuesday, moving him forward into a general election showdown with Republican Gov. Rick Scott.
Mrs. Wasserman-Schultz said that Mr. Crist is “refreshing” when compared to the likes of former Gov. Jeb Bush, whom she served under in the state legislature.
“It was absolutely impossible to work as Jeb Bush as governor,” she said. “When Charlie Crist became governor, I didn’t agree with him on everything, but I will tell you that some of the things that he did that were against his own party’s interest and angered his own party.”
The latest polling shows that Mr. Crist and Mr. Scott are running neck and neck. Mr. Bush, meanwhile, is considered a possible 2016 presidential contender.
