The Washington Redskins released offensive lineman Mike McGlynn, tight end Matt Veldman and wide receiver Rashad Ross on Tuesday, bringing their roster to the mandated 75 players before the 4 p.m. deadline.
A starter with the Indianapolis Colts during the past two seasons, McGlynn was the most established of the three players. The 29-year-old had worked as center Kory Lichtensteiger’s backup for the majority of the preseason. He might have become expendable Saturday night, when starting right guard Chris Chester took a few snaps at center with the first-team offense and had no hiccups.
McGlynn’s release before the first roster deadline, as opposed to Saturday’s deadline for final cuts, will give him an opportunity to possibly sign with another team.
Veldman was a late addition to the Redskins’ training camp roster, signing with the team as a free agent on Aug. 14. The North Dakota State product spent less than two weeks with Washington and likely will be edged out by rookie Ted Bolser for a spot on the practice squad.
Ross signed with the Redskins in May as a free agent after spending last year on the practice squads of Tennessee and Kansas City. He was considered a long shot to make the final roster given the starting corps of DeSean Jackson, Pierre Garcon and Andre Roberts as well as the progression of third-year wideout Aldrick Robinson and rookie Ryan Grant.
The Redskins must have their roster at 53 players, not including those on the physically-unable-to-perform list, by 4 p.m. on Saturday.
