The White House said last week that airstrikes in Syria may be an option for dealing with the Islamic State. President Obama has moved a step closer to making that happen by authorizing reconnaissance flights over the nation.
A U.S. official told CNN on Monday that the flights could begin at any time.
Sources told the network that one of the drones that will likely be used is a Global Hawk, which can fly up to 60,000 feet while acquiring information on fixed and mobile targets.
The network noted that any U.S. airstrikes that might occur in Syria could end up assisting Syria President Bashar Assad staying in power. Over 200,000 people have died since the start of Syria’s Civil War in March 2011.
