U.S. Senate candidate Joni Ernst is pledging in a new television ad that she rolled out in Iowa this week to support the nation’s popular entitlement programs for older Americans.

Mrs. Ernst, a Republican, said she will protect Social Security and Medicare for seniors.

“I’m gonna keep the promise we made to protect Social Security and Medicare for every senior that depends on them, like my mom and dad,” Mrs. Ernst vows in the ad. “That’s a promise I’ll keep for their generation and generations to come.”

Mrs. Ernst, a state senator, is running against Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley for the seat held by retiring Sen. Tom Harkin.

The latest polls show that Mrs. Ernst and Mr. Braley are running neck and neck.
