David Blaine, known nationwide for his daredevil magical performances, took his show to a crowd of inmates at a Manhattan Department of Corrections facility that included rival gang members from the Bloods and Crips.
“How the hell does a killer get to watch a rabbit get pulled out of a hat?” one source said of the hourlong show that was conducted for high-security inmates at the Manhattan Detention Complex, called The Tombs, the New York Post reported.
A guard described the performance as highly entertaining.
“He was levitating and teasing inmates with tricks on how to break out of here,” the guard said, the New York Post reported. “You know that isn’t happening.”
Sixty inmates attended the show, which was held on July 26 and performed by Mr. Blaine for free, the New York Post reported. The show’s details were just released.
“The Department of Correction uses positive reinforcement as one of many strategies to reduce inmate idleness and improve facility safety,” one prison official said, the New York Post reported. “Inmates who attended this event were being rewarded for good behavior.”
