ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Gov. Andrew Cuomo has opened a new firehouse the Adirondacks and announced funding to repair a local scenic highway in the Lake Placid region.

The governor cut the ribbon the new firehouse in the Essex County hamlet of Upper Jay Tuesday morning. Last summer, the state kicked in more than $800,000 to build a new fire station in nearby Keene to replace the facility that was destroyed by Tropical Storm Irene in 2011.

Cuomo then headed to the nearby Whiteface Veteran’s Memorial Highway to receive an update on work to repair the eight-mile roadway.

The state is spending millions of dollars to improve the highway on the mountain, home to a ski resort and a popular scenic tourist destination outside Lake Placid.
