The Democrats may not have a lock on the potential 30-million member Hispanic voting bloc, this according to conservative Cuban-American scholar Mike Gonzalez, a senior fellow at the Heritage Foundation. He’s outlined his ideas in an upcoming book titled “A Race for the Future: How Conservatives Can Break the Liberal Monopoly on Hispanic America.” Mr. Gonzales is aggressive, but personal in his outreach.

“Conservatives can make the moral case to Hispanics on several fronts rather than cede this ground to the Left and allow it to paint us as selfish and uncaring,” Mr. Gonzalez says. “Appealing to Hispanics’ inner pride and their Spanish sense of moral code is a trump card that should not go unused. The Left has gotten away for far too long with the assertion that the welfare state makes us stewards of one another. We need to change that claim because it is baseless.”

The historically-minded author, a former official in the George W. Bush administration, argues that conservatives must recognize that the Hispanic demographic comprises “varied people and varied issues” and that it is time to reverse cultural indicators that sway Hispanics towards progressive, big-government messages.

“The choices Hispanics will not only impact the 2016 election, but the future of America as we know it,” says Mr. Gonzales.

The book will be published Sept. 2 by Crown Forum.
