Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee said Tuesday that President Obama should seek a new authorization from Congress before responding to the growing threat from Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant in the Middle East.

During an appearance on MSNBC’s “The Daily Rundown,” Mr. Corker said that Congress has a responsibility to weigh in on - and “own” - the nation’s next moves in Iraq and Syria.

“For the American people’s sake, Congress should weigh in,” the Republican said. “Congress should be part of this. Congress should own [the decision.]”

“I think there is a general agreement that an authorization has to take place,” Mr. Corker said, adding that he hopes that lawmakers don’t try to sidestep a vote because of the midterm elections.
