MOUNT CHARLESTON, Nev. (AP) — Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval says a jurisdictional snag has been solved and a flood control project will be built before winter to protect homes on Mount Charleston, northwest of Las Vegas.
The Republican governor made the announcement Monday in a Rainbow Canyon neighborhood hit by flash flooding during an intense July 28 thunderstorm.
Ten homes, several roads and a water pipe were damaged by mud and debris washed from wildfire-scarred slopes on the mountain some 30 miles from downtown Las Vegas.
Damage was estimated at more than $1 million.
Sandoval says work could begin within a few days.
The project had been stalled after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers offered in June to build an earthen berm, but Clark County balked at assuming maintenance, ownership and liability.
