Safety Phillip Thomas, who missed his entire rookie season because of a Lisfranc sprain in his left foot, will need to undergo further examination after experiencing inflammation following the Redskins’ preseason game at Baltimore on Saturday, coach Jay Gruden said.
“It’s a concern because it’s the same foot,” Gruden said. “He’s going to get it checked out again, and it’s just sore. It’s still bothering him. You can see a little bit that it looks like it’s bothering him a little bit, but we’ve got to get it fixed because he’s a good football player and we need to make sure he’s healthy when he’s ready to play.”
Thomas, a fourth-round draft pick out of Fresno State a year ago, did not practice on Monday. He’s again pegged to be the backup to starting strong safety Brandon Meriweather, but needs to prove he can stay healthy. He also missed the Aug. 7 preseason opener against New England after straining a hamstring the second week of training camp.
Washington was also without tight end Jordan Reed for Monday’s practice after Reed sprained a thumb during the 23-17 loss on Saturday. Outside linebacker Brian Orakpo did not practice because of a sprained right ankle and cornerback Chase Minnifield sat out with a strained hamstring, while inside linebacker Darryl Sharpton, who missed the last two preseason games with a high right ankle sprain, was limited in his return to practice.
Rookie left tackle Morgan Moses finished a full practice despite leaving the game on Saturday with a sprained MCL in his right knee, while cornerback Tracy Porter may have re-injured a strained hamstring in Monday’s practice and inside linebacker Akeem Jordan sustained a bruised thigh.
