President Obama is sending three of his aides to the funeral Monday of Michael Brown, the black 18-year-old shot dead by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri.

White House aide Broderick Johnson, who leads the president’s My Brother’s Keeper Task Force, will be joined at the funeral by Marlon Marshall and Heather Foster, who work in the White House Office of Public Engagement. Mr. Marshall is a St. Louis native who attended high school with the dead teen’s mother.

Since Brown’s shooting Aug. 9 sparked violent protests, Mr. Obama has resisted calls to travel to Ferguson, instead sending Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. last week to meet with community leaders. The president and Mr. Holder have criticized police tactics that included the use of armored vehicles to confront protesters.
