Vermont bistro owners say they’ve taken down their sign about bacon after learning a Muslim woman in the community found the advertisement offensive and insensitive to those who don’t eat pork.
Sneakers Bistro & Cafe put up a sign on a local Winooski lamppost saying, “Yield for Bacon” with the “Sneakers” emblazoned across the middle, as part of a community campaign to trade advertising space for gardening work, The Blaze reported.
But one local Muslim said the sign was offensive because it discriminated against those who didn’t eat pork — so the restaurant owners took it down, WPTZ reported. Now residents are outraged.
“It’s nice that they were respectful enough to take it down,” one resident said to the local WPTZ. “But I also think they shouldn’t have, or had to, at any rate.”
And another resident said, The Blaze reported: “I respect her religion and her right to believe what she wants, but I’m pretty sure the First Amendment extends to bacon and the selling of it.”
