Outside linebacker Rob Jackson, who had been with the Redskins since being drafted in the seventh round out of Kansas State in 2008, was among nine players cut on Sunday as the team attempts to get under the 75-man roster limit by Tuesday.
Jackson played in all 44 regular-season games over the past three years, missing only the first four last year after being suspended for a violation of the league’s policy on substances of abuse. He notably started 14 games in 2012 in place of an injured Brian Orakpo and had 26 tackles, including 4.5 sacks, and intercepted four passes.
But Jackson, who signed a one-year, $795,000 contract to return to Washington in April, had been pushed by recently signed Everette Brown for second-team snaps on Saturday and was also replaced on special teams.
In addition to Jackson, the team announced it had cut outside linebacker Adrian Robinson, who was signed to the active roster before the final game of last season. Wide receivers Cody Hoffman and Rashad Lawrence and free safety Ross Madison, all of whom went undrafted in May, were also waived, along with inside linebacker Jeremy Kimbrough, fullback Stephen Campbell and defensive ends Jake McDonough and Jeremy Towns.
The Redskins entered Saturday’s preseason game against Baltimore with 89 players on their active roster, and many of those who were released were considered long shots to make the initial 53-man roster for the Sept. 7 opener at Houston.
