The body of actor and comedian Robin Williams was cremated, and his ashes were scattered over San Francisco Bay, his death certificate said.

Williams was discovered dead on Aug. 11 in his California home. His death was caused by hanging in an apparent suicide, CNN reported, citing medical investigators. His ashes were reportedly scattered just a day later, CNN said.

Marin County Assistant Deputy Chief Coroner Lt. Keith Boyd said investigators think Williams used a belt to hang himself from one of his bedroom doors, CNN reported. Lt. Boyd wouldn’t confirm that Williams left a letter, saying only that investigators would discuss “the note or a note” at a later time, CNN said.

The coroner’s investigation did reveal that the actor had been “seeking treatment for depressions,” Lt. Boyd said, CNN reported.
